England

London Β· Eastbourne β€” Accent switch, skin change.

πŸ“– Excerpt from Chapter 3

β€œI changed my accent to fit in. Then I realized I wasn't just changing the way I spoke β€” I was changing my skin. In London I learned that language isn't just communication. It's identity.”

β€” Chapter 3: England

πŸ“– Excerpt

β€œEastbourne was quiet. Too quiet for an Italian boy used to chaos. But that's where I discovered silence β€” and in the silence, I found myself. For the first time, I was alone with my thoughts, without the protection of family, without the safety net of home.”

β€” Chapter 3: England

πŸ“– More from Chapter 3

England was where I first understood the relationship between language and power. In Italy, I was articulate, funny, persuasive. In England, I was reduced to my accent. People heard where I was from before they heard what I was saying.

So I worked on my accent. I listened obsessively to native speakers. I practiced in the mirror. I softened my vowels, sharpened my consonants. And slowly, I began to sound more English. But something strange happened: as I sounded more English, I felt less Italian. And I wasn't yet English enough to feel English.

This is the immigrant's paradox. You change yourself to belong. But in changing, you lose the self that was trying to belong. You end up between two identities, fully at home in neither.

It took me years to understand that this in-between space isn't a problem to solve. It's a superpower to develop. The people who can move between worlds, who can speak multiple languages and hold multiple truths β€” they are the bridges the world needs.
